A patent for the first wireless phone as we know today was issued in US Patent Number 3,449,750 to George Sweigert of Euclid, Ohio on June 10, 1969.

In 1945, the zero generation (0G) of mobile telephones was introduced.[citation needed] Like other technologies of the time, it involved a single, powerful base station covering a wide area, and each telephone would effectively monopolize a channel over that whole area while in use.

In 1960, the world first partly automatic car phone system Mobile System A (MTA)|MTA was launched in Sweden. With MTA, calls could be made and received in the car to/from the public telephone network, and the car phone could be paged. The phone number was dialed using a rotary dial. Calling from the car was fully automatic, while calling to it required an operator. The person who wanted to call a mobile phone had to know which base station the mobile phone was covered by. The system was developed by Sture Laurn and other engineers at Televerket network operator. Ericsson provided the switchboard while Svenska Radioaktiebolaget (SRA) owned by Ericsson and Marconi provided the telephones and base station equipment. MTA phones were consisted of vacuum tubes and relays, and had a weight of 40 kg. In 1962, a more modern version called Mobile System B (MTB) was launched, which was a push-button telephone, and which used transistors in order to enhance the telephone calling capacity and improve its operational reliability. In 1971 the MTD version was launched, opening for several different brands of equipment and gaining commercial success.

The concepts of frequency reuse and handoff, as well as a number of other concepts that formed the basis of modern cell phone technology, were described in the 1970s; see for example Fluhr and Nussbaum, Hachenburg et al. , and U.S. Patent 4,152,647, issued May 1, 1979 to Charles A. Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive is considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for hand-held use in a non-vehicle setting. Cooper is the first inventor named on “Radio telephone system” filed on October 17, 1973 with the US Patent Office and later issued as US Patent 3,906,166; other named contributors on the patent included Cooper’s boss, John F. The first commercially automated cellular network (the 1G generation) was launched in Japan by NTT in 1979. The initial launch network covered the full metropolitan area of Tokyo’s over 20 million inhabitants with a cellular network of 23 base stations. Within five years, the NTT network had been expanded to cover the whole population of Japan and became the first nation-wide 2G network.

The first NMT installations as well as the First AMPS installations were based on the Ericsson AXE digital exchange nodes.

Cellular systems required several leaps of technology, including handover, which allowed a conversation to continue as a mobile phone traveled from cell to cell. This system included variable transmission power in both the base stations and the telephones (controlled by the base stations), which allowed range and cell size to vary. As the system expanded and neared capacity, the ability to reduce transmission power allowed new cells to be added, resulting in more, smaller cells and thus more capacity. The evidence of this growth can still be seen in the many older, tall cell site towers with no antennae on the upper parts of their towers. These sites originally created large cells, and so had their antennae mounted atop high towers; the towers were designed so that as the system expandednd cell sizes shrankhe antennae could be lowered on their original masts to reduce range.

Digital mobile communication (2G)

The first “modern” network technology on digital 2G (second generation) cellular technology was launched by Radiolinja (now part of Elisa Group) in 1991 in Finland on the GSM standard which also marked the introduction of competition in mobile telecoms when Radiolinja challenged incumbent Telecom Finland (now part of TeliaSonera) who ran a 1G NMT network.

The first data services appeared on mobile phones starting with person-to-person SMS text messaging in Finland in 1993. First trial payments using a mobile phone to pay for a Coca Cola vending machine were set in Finland in 1998. The first commercial payments were mobile parking trialled in Sweden but first commercially launched in Norway in 1999. The first content sold to mobile phones was the ringing tone, first launched in 1998 in Finland. The first full internet service on mobile phones was introduced by NTT DoCoMo in Japan in 1999.

Wideband mobile communication (3G)

In 2001 the first commercial launch of 3G (Third Generation) was again in Japan by NTT DoCoMo on the WCDMA standard. The standard 2G CDMA networks became 3G compliant with the adoption of Revision A to EV-DO. Revision A of EV-DO makes several additions to the protocol while keeping it completely backwards compatible with older versions of EV-DO.

These changes included the introduction of several new forward link data rates that increase the maximum burst rate from 2.45 Mbit/s to 3.1 Mbit/s. Also included were protocols that would decrease connection establishment time (called enhanced access channel MAC), the ability for more than one mobile to share the same time slot (multi-user packets) and the introduction of QoS flags. All these were put in place to allow for low latency, low bit rate communications such as VoIP.

One of the newest 3G technologies to implemented is High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). It is an enhanced 3G (third generation) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family, also coined 3.5G, 3G+ or turbo 3G, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. Current HSDPA deployments support down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s. Further speed increases are available with HSPA+, which provides speeds of up to 42 Mbit/s downlink and 84 Mbit/s with Release 9 of the 3GPP standards.

The radio interface in these systems is based on all-IP packet switching, MIMO diversity, multi-carrier modulation schemes, dynamic channel assignment (DCA) and channel-dependent scheduling. A 4G system should be a complete replacement for current network infrastructure and is expected to be able to provide a comprehensive and secure IP solution where voice, data, and streamed multimedia can be given to users on a “Anytime, Anywhere” basis, and at much higher data rates than previous generations. Sprint has a 4G network in select areas. By 2011 it is expected that more wireless companies will launch 4G Broadband networks.

Formerly, the most common form of mobile phone batteries were nickel metal-hydride, as they have a low size and weight. lithium ion batteries are sometimes used, as they are lighter and do not have the voltage depression that nickel metal-hydride batteries do. Many mobile phone manufacturers have now switched to using lithium-polymer batteries as opposed to the older Lithium-Ion, the main advantages of this being even lower weight and the possibility to make the battery a shape other than strict cuboid. Mobile phone manufacturers have been experimenting with alternative power sources, including solar cells and Coca Cola.

Typical mobile phone SIM card

In addition to the battery, GSM mobile phones require a small microchip, called a Subscriber Identity Module or SIM Card, to function. Approximately the size of a small postage stamp, the SIM Card is usually placed underneath the battery in the rear of the unit, and (when properly activated) stores the phone’s configuration data, and information about the phone itself, such as which calling plan the subscriber is using. When the subscriber removes the SIM Card, it can be re-inserted into another phone that is configured to accept the SIM card and used as normal.

Each SIM Card is activated by use of a unique numerical identifier; once activated, the identifier is locked down and the card is permanently locked in to the activating network. For this reason, most retailers refuse to accept the return of an activated SIM Card.

Those cell phones that do not use a SIM Card have the data programmed in to their memory. This data is accessed by using a special digit sequence to access the “NAM” as in “Name” or number programming menu. From here, one can add information such as a new number for the phone, new Service Provider numbers, new emergency numbers, change their Authentication Key or A-Key code, and update their Preferred Roaming List or PRL. However, to prevent someone from accidentally disabling their phone or removing it from the network, the Service Provider puts a lock on this data called a Master Subsidiary Lock or MSL.

The MSL also ensures that the Service Provider gets payment for the phone that was purchased or “leased”. For example, the Motorola RAZR V9C costs upwards of CAD 0. Depending on the carrier, such a phone may be available for as little as 0. The difference is paid by the customer in the form of a monthly bill. If the carrier did not use an MSL, then they may lose the 00 difference that is paid in the monthly bill, since some customers would cancel their service and take the phone to another carrier.

The MSL applies to the SIM only so once the contract has been completed the MSL still applies to the SIM. The phone however, is also initially locked by the manufacturer into the Service Providers MSL. This lock may be disabled so that the phone can use other Service Providers SIM cards. Most phones purchased outside the US are unlocked phones because there are numerous Service Providers in close proximity to one another or have overlapping coverage. The cost to unlock a phone varies but is usually very cheap and is sometimes provided by independent phone vendors.

Having an unlocked phone is extremely useful for travelers due to the high cost of using the MSL Service Providers access when outside the normal coverage areas. It can cost sometimes up to 10 times as much to use a locked phone overseas as in the normal service area, even with discounted rates. T-Mobile will provide a SIM unlock code to account holders in good standing after 90 days according to their FAQ.

For example, in Jamaica, an AT&T subscriber might pay in excess of US.65 per minute for discounted international service while a B-Mobile (Jamaican) customer would pay US.20 per minute for the same international service. Some Service Providers focus sales on international sales while others focus on regional sales. For example, the same B-Mobile customer might pay more for local calls but less for international calls than a subscriber to the Jamaican national phone C&W (Cable & Wireless) company. These rate differences are mainly due to currency variations because SIM purchases are made in the local currency. In the US, this type of service competition does not exist because some of the major Service Providers do not offer Pay-As-You-Go services. Market

Mobile phone manufacturers’ market share in Q3/2008

The world’s largest individual mobile operator is China Mobile with over 500 million mobile phone subcribers. The world’s largest mobile operator group by subscribers is UK based Vodafone. There are over 600 mobile operators and carriers in commercial production worldwide. Over 50 mobile operators have over 10 million subscribers each, and over 150 mobile operators have at least one million subscribers by the end of 2008 (source wireless intelligence).

In mobile phone handsets, in Q3/2008, Nokia was the world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones, with a global device market share of 39.4%, followed by Samsung (17.3%), Sony Ericsson (8.6%), Motorola (8.5%) and LG Electronics (7.7%). These manufacturers accounted for over 80% of all mobile phones sold at that time.

Other manufacturers include Apple Inc., Audiovox (now UTStarcom), Benefon, BenQ-Siemens, CECT, HTC Corporation, Fujitsu, Kyocera, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Neonode, Panasonic, Palm, Matsushita, Pantech Wireless Inc., Philips, Qualcomm Inc., Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM), Sagem, Sanyo, Sharp, Siemens, Sendo, Sierra Wireless, SK Teletech, T&A Alcatel, Huawei, Trium, Toshiba[citation needed] and Vidalco. There are also specialist communication systems related to (but distinct from) mobile phones.

Media

The mobile phone became a mass media channel in 1998 when the first ringtones were sold to mobile phones by Radiolinja in Finland. Soon other media content appeared such as news, videogames, jokes, horoscopes, TV content and advertising. In 2006 the total value of mobile phone paid media content exceeded internet paid media content and was worth 31 Billion dollars (source Informa 2007). The value of music on phones was worth 9.3 Billion dollars in 2007 and gaming was worth over 5 billion dollars in 2007.

The mobile phone is often called the Fourth Screen (if counting cinema, TV and PC screens as the first three) or Third Screen (counting only TV and PC screens).[weasel words] It is also called the Seventh of the Mass Media (with Print, Recordings, Cinema, Radio, TV and Internet the first six). Most early content for mobile tended to be copies of legacy media, such as the banner advertisement or the TV news highlight video clip. Recently unique content for mobile has been emerging, from the ringing tones and ringback tones in music to “mobisodes,” video content that has been produced exclusively for mobile phones.

The advent of media on the mobile phone has also produced the opportunity to identify and track Alpha Users or Hubs, the most influential members of any social community. AMF Ventures measured in 2007 the relative accuracy of three mass media, and found that audience measures on mobile were nine times more accurate than on the internet and 90 times more accurate than on TV.[original research?]

Privacy

Cell phones have numerous privacy issues associated with them, and are regularly used by governments to perform surveillance.

Law enforcement and intelligence services in the UK and the US possess technology to remotely activate the microphones in cell phones in order to listen to conversations that take place nearby the person who holds the phone.

Mobile phones are also commonly used to collect location data. The geographical location of a mobile phone can be determined easily (whether it is being used or not), using a technique known multilateration to calculate the differences in time for a signal to travel from the cell phone to each of several cell towers near the owner of the phone.

There exists a growing body within the scientific community which believes mobile phone use represents a long-term health risk, particularly to young children. Certain countries, including France, restrict the use and sale of cell phones to minors for this reason. The telecommunications insdustry rejects such claims, claming there is no proof of long-term adverse health effects. Groups of scientists, however, such as the U.S. – based group “Bioinitiative (see www.bioinitiative.org) argue that because mobile phone use is recently-introduced technology, long-term ‘proof’ has been impossible – and use should be restricted, or monitored closely, while the technology is still new. The very first generation of cell-phone users, for example, are only now entering middle-age. Studies in Europe, for example, are only now emerging which link long-term cell phone use to brain tumours. Other studies link cell-phone use to child-diabetes, concentration difficulty, and sleep disorders.

Use while driving

Mobile phone use while driving is common but controversial. Being distracted while operating a motor vehicle has been shown to increase the risk of accident. Because of this, many jurisdictions prohibit the use of mobile phones while driving. Egypt, Israel, Japan, Portugal and Singapore ban both hand-held and hands-free use of a mobile phone whilst many other countries ncluding the UK, France, and many US states ban hand-held phone use only, allowing hands-free use.

Due to the increasing complexity of mobile phones ften more like mobile computers in their available uses it has introduced additional difficulties for law enforcement officials in being able to tell one usage from another as drivers use their devices. This is more apparent in those countries who ban both hand-held and hands-free usage, rather those who have banned hand-held use only, as officials cannot easily tell which function of the mobile phone is being used simply by visually looking at the driver. This can mean that drivers may be stopped for using their device illegally on a phone call, when in fact they were not; instead using the device for a legal purpose such as the phones’ incorporated controls for car stereo or satnav usage  either as part of the cars’ own device or directly on the mobile phone itself.

Cases like these can often only be proved otherwise by a check of the mobile operators phone call records to see if a call was taking place during the journey concerned. Although in many countries the law enforcement official may have stopped the driver for a differing offence, for example, for lack of due care and attention in relation to their driving.

Schools

Some schools limit or restrict the use of mobile phones. Schools set restrictions on the use of mobile phones because of the use of cell phones for cheating on tests, harassment and bullying, causing threats to the schools security, distractions to the students and facilitating gossip and other social activity in school. Many mobile phones are banned in school locker room facilities, public restrooms and swimming pools due to the built-in cameras that most phones now feature, though some countries and manufacturers have taken steps to protect privacy in such areas by giving their products audible ‘shutter noises’, that cannot be disabled.[citation needed]

A recently published study has reviewed the incidence of mobile phone use while cycling and its effects on behaviour and safety.
Comparison to similar systems

Car phone 

A type of telephone permanently mounted in a vehicle, these often have more powerful transmitters, an external antenna and loudspeaker for hands free use. They usually connect to the same networks as regular mobile phones.

Cordless telephone (portable phone) 

Cordless phones are telephones which use one or more radio handsets in place of a wired handset. The handsets connect wirelessly to a base station, which in turn connects to a conventional land line for calling. Unlike mobile phones, cordless phones use private base stations (belonging to the land-line subscriber), which are not shared.

Professional Mobile Radio 

Advanced professional mobile radio systems can be very similar to mobile phone systems. Notably, the IDEN standard has been used as both a private trunked radio system as well as the technology for several large public providers. Similar attempts have even been made to use TETRA, the European digital PMR standard, to implement public mobile networks.

Radio phone 

This is a term which covers radios which could connect into the telephone network. These phones may not be mobile; for example, they may require a mains power supply, or they may require the assistance of a human operator to set up a PSTN phone call.

Satellite phone 

This type of phone communicates directly with an artificial satellite, which in turn relays calls to a base station or another satellite phone. A single satellite can provide coverage to a much greater area than terrestrial base stations. Since satellite phones are costly, their use is typically limited to people in remote areas where no mobile phone coverage exists, such as mountain climbers, mariners in the open sea, and news reporters at disaster sites.

IP Phone 

This type of phone delivers or receives calls over internet, LAN or WAN networks using VoIP as opposed to traditional CDMA and GSM networks. In business, the majority of these IP Phones tend to be connected via wired Ethernet, however wireless varieties do exist. Several vendors have developed standalone WiFi phones. Additionally, some cellular mobile phones include the ability to place VoIP calls over cellular high speed data networks and/or wireless internet.

Volvo Marks 80th Anniversary

Volvo Cars, the Swedish car manufacturer wholly owned by the Ford Motor Company, celebrates its 80 years of involvement and existence in the auto industry. The car company known for their dedication to consumer safety started in 1927 when it was formed as a subsidiary of ball bearing manufacturer SKF.

In 1935, the company was sold publicly at the Swedish stock exchange. From that time until 1999, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo. After that, the Ford Motor Company acquired the car brand and made it a part of Ford’s Premier Automotive Group which is composed of European luxury brand like Jaguar and the recently sold Aston Martin. Volvo specializes in manufacturing high-end cars known for safety. Competition for Volvo includes vehicles sold under the Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and Saab brands.

The Scandinavian car manufacturer is based in Gothenburg, Sweden. Its first managing director was Assar Gabrielson and the first technical manager was Gustav Larson. We won’t give this laptop a pass thanks to its speakers alone, but they help justify the relatively higher price.

the software is a little funky. occassionally i need to reset the network settings to factory settings and re-establish the network wep keys, etc. you definitely should have some knowledge with basic wireless networking, etc. 

i love my squeezebox duet. i now have access to my huge mp3 collection and have found i probably enjoy the various internet radio stations as much as my mp3 collection. it’s great. though this is just for the remote control, i don’t understand what you’d use the remote control for without the other box.

So, I will make this quick since there are already lots of reviews about this product. 

I LOVE this product it works great most of the time. Here are some key points 

1. I ended up purchasing from Amazon because there was a rebate and free shipping but the price fluctuates all over the web 
2. Internet radio works perfectly, I have 20,000 MP3 files but I still listen to online radio for something I wouldn’t normally buy 
3. The remote battery lasts a long time 
4. Occasionally it needs to be rebooted to find the music again, very easy to do, just shut down the remote, restart the squeeze server and all is well 
5. Wireless works great, anything you read about wireless problems are the customer’s router and NOT this product. I had a very flaky Linksys router that would drop my iPhone connection ALL the time but once I upgraded my router, I no longer have any problems. 
6. It’s very small, don’t be surprised when you get this tiny little box in the package. I was looking through the box for something bigger. 
7. Setup to a receiver is very easy. I currently have mine hooked up to the AUX jack on my downstairs receiver with speakers running upstairs 

Overall after a few months use I am very happy, rarely is something worth the price lately, but this is.

Very cool product, very hard installation – I truly get it why people fail to install it

I installed the duet with the receiver wired to the lan and not via wifi (the unrecommended way, BTW…) and had to do all kind of resets while trying to enter the correct information for both controller and receiver, till I got it to work. 

first the controller didnt connect to my server, that the receiver didnt connect, I was just guessing my way around, reseting things, when suddenly it caught. 

this is defenestrate not ready for prime time installation, but when it got going – it was perfect. 

if you know your way around troubleshooting unfamiliar products – this is a fair challenge. if you are not – high chances you will get stack. 

I like this product very much, and do recommend it to anyone willing to spend time getting it to work.

Perfect network player

I store my music collection on a PC in WMA lossless format. There aren’t many players that can decode it. After my Roku Soundbridge died I had to find a replacement. Now I’m glad it died because Squeezbox is so much better. Setup was a breeze although I would recommend reading manual beforehand. I don’t have to walk up to the player to choose my music any more – high resolution screen on Squeezbox controller is right in front of me and I can easily browse my collection. In addition I was able to save my favorite Internet radio stations under Favorites and have it couple of clicks away from Main screen. 
I organize my music collection using WMP 11 and all information including cover art is displayed on Squeezbox. 
I’ve been using it for 2 months now without any problems. My PC and Squeezbox are on 24/7. I also like being able to control the player remotely from my PC, which is far away from my stereo. Price may be high comparing to other players but functionality beats them all. I would recommend this product to anyone.

When my Logitech SqueezeBox Duet stopped working, it was within the 2 year warrantee period, so they sent me a pre-paid UPS sticker to return it. Once they got the unit, they sent me a brand new unit per their policy (no refurbs – no questions asked); and they, while I was waiting, gave me an incident tracking website where I could correspond with them,… e.g. they could give me updates as to when they received my unit; when they had sent the new one out, including the UPS tracking number, etc. Dealing with Logitech Customer Service was an ABSOLUTE CLINIC in customer service. 5 stars!

Squeeze Me, Baby

The Squeezebox Duet is just about the neatest thing I’ve owned in a whole long time. I’ve got music galore on my Mac’s hard drive. I’ve got two personalized Pandora radio stations and I listen to a heck of a lot of internet radio stations (music and talk) and until now, I’ve had my iMac hooked up to my stereo amp via the headphone jack on the back of the Mac. No more. With this little baby I can get all my iTunes music, plus my Pandora stations and my favorite internet stations. 

The Squeezebox Duet comes in two parts. The base station like device hooks up to your stereo and it communicates wirelessly with the iPod like remote. The remote’s got a brilliant color screen and is as intuitive as an iPod. From my sofa I can control my music and I’m digging that a lot. Crystal clear Beatles and Stones, Airplane and Floyd, can’t get better than that. Five big stars from me, would that I could give it more.

Doggone Good Way to Get Your Music

This nifty device takes the music from my computer and delivers it to my home stereo system. I have a McIntosh MC 2105 Power Amp, the one with the big blue VU Meters, and I connected the Squeezebox to it via the RCA jacks on the back, turned my Amp select knob to Aux, turned on the Squeezebox, which found my wireless network without a problem and in no time I was good to go. 

A friend of mine has the Sonos Music System and I was considering getting that as well, but the Squeezebox is less than half as much and about the only difference I can see is that you can’t listen to different internet radio stations in different rooms at the same time, but then I’m only in one room at a time, anyway. And maybe the Sonos Music System is a touch more responsive, but that’s nitpicking. 

I guess I should mention that like with the Sonos Music System you need a box, amp and speakers for every room you want your music in. Or you could use powered speakers. I have a second box in my bedroom and I thought of maybe getting one for my office, but I use Logitech’s Z Cinéma Advanced Surround Sound System there and really like it.

Of all the negative reviews I’ve read so far seems to be with the dropped connections. I have not experienced any of the dropped connections, maybe because I prefer to listen to my own music collection stored on my PC. I rarely listen to online music & when I do, everything was fine. 
I got really lucky & found a deal on the Logitech website where they were selling dented box units for only 7.00, that is over 0 off the retail price of 9. Actually the unit itself is brand new & the only thing that was damaged was the box itself. 
I have to say, so far I love this unit. The ability to access my music files from anywhere in the house is awesome. Sure the SONOS is great, but you will need to drop at least 00 to get started. Plus I trust the brand Logitech more than I do with Sonos. 

I was able to download an app for my MOTO DROID where I was able to control the unit from my phone, so you Apple people are not the only one that can do that with your phones. For those that want to free your music from wires at a very reasonable price, I strongly recommend this…

Very Smooth Cell Phone LG Kg320

LG introduced latest design cell phone LG KG320. Its 1.3 megapixel camera is capable of capturing images in five different resolutions – 72×72, 220×176, 320×240, 640×480, and 1280×960. The LG KG320 provides quite an impressive range of settings for you to tweak with. Brightness can be adjusted to one of five settings, white balance can be set to auto, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent, or daylight, and a 4x digital zoom is provided. In order to zoom, however, you need to change the resolution of the picture first. Changing it to 640×480 will allow you to zoom 2x, and changing it to 320×240 will allow you to zoom up to the maximum 4x. This was extremely cumbersome, since it involved so many steps just to get a zoom. Additional effects such as sepia, black and white, and negative color tones are also available. A big letdown here is the time the camera takes to activate – the user is left waiting for three seconds before the camera starts, and shutter lag is an agonizing three seconds on top of that.

The LG KG320 is also capable of recording video clips, but I was not able to test this feature, as somehow our review unit just did not respond when I tried to change the camera mode from Still Shot to Video. I suspect this is firmware related and should be fixed in the official production unit.

The LG KG320 includes a music player compatible with MP3 files. With the 128MB of on board memory, you should be able to fit about 20 odd songs or so onto the phone. Having expandable memory would have been much better, however. The MP3 player application that comes with the phone is pretty much the same as the one found on the KG800 Chocolate phone. It still can’t support playlists or ID3 tags, and worst of all, the music player can’t work in the background; this is an area that LG must look into and improve on. Basic equalizer settings are available to the user in the application, and three funky visualizations are provided for kicks. Listening with the provided ear buds, the LG KG320 sounded tinny and lacked bass.

Though the LG KG320 does not have an external memory card slot, as previously mentioned, it provides 128MB of on board memory, which is ample for most considering the low resolution of the camera, and provided the user does not want to store his/her whole music collection on the device. USB 1.1 Mass Storage support is included, though this has quite a slow transfer rate, so transferring large amounts of data might prove to be quite a task. A Comparison of 3 of the Newest Hatchbacks Around

The compromised visibility was the only downside of the great interior design of the Vauxhall. The good quality of the interior of the Renault was marred by the fact that it was difficult to get comfortable and it was a shame but the layout of the brilliant driving position of the Mini was marred by the poor quality of the plastic facing.

One of the definitive issues that we needed to take a look at what’s how much value for money was there actually in any of these cars. With a very small depreciation and a strong second hand price the Mini was a definite attraction as far as second-hand owners were concerned. The Vauxhall would have performed better being the cheapest car to purchase and potentially being better equipped but this was marred by sharply increased quite steep running costs.

Looked at objectively all three of the cars are actually quite good value for money but probably the Mini Cooper S. comes out on top the handling speed and overall performance of the Mini means that it has quite the strong support to place despite the amazing fact that the inside looks cheap but hardly any boot in the rear seats are extremely small. Certainly one of the aspects of the Mini is that the extras are surprisingly expensive.

Set against the mini you look at the Vauxhall and think that this is a good all rounder of a car. The performance is excellent and the handling superb has an excellent interior. The downside is the fact that the visibility is compromised another negative factor is that it does not appear to have as many safety features as the other two.

Lastly the Renault comes in third which is a shame as the handling of the grip of the co-op is amazing, the engine performance and power of the car is quite outstanding once it’s going. It is solidly built but you really have to work the car and engine hard to get the best out of it.

Icon Identification – What Those iPod Symbols Mean

If you are a new user of the ever-popular iPod, you may have noticed that it takes some time to learn what those little icons mean and want to know when you should be alarmed or bothered. Every one of them has a purpose and we all know how much of a drag it is to read the Users Manual.


Would not it be easy if someone just spelled it out in plain English for all to see? Instead of digging through a manual full of technical jargon, here we will discuss the meanings of the icons popping up on your screen.


You will see a Battery icon when your battery is low. You will need to plug in your iPod to your computer or the nearest electrical outlet. Let it charge for at least a few hours or longer if possible. After charging, if the battery icon still appears on your screen, you may have a bigger issue at hand. You may need to do a bit of troubleshooting or replace your battery.


To trouble shoot your battery, you should make you sure you have the latest firmware upgrade. Then, you need to discharge your battery and just let your iPod play without interruption until it dies. Then, you need to recharge the battery. To replace your battery, you can contact your manufacturer or retailer.


If you see the Folder icon this means you have a software problem. It is suggested that you restore your entire iPod by updating the system or erasing your iPod. To erase and restore your iPod you need to open :My Computer: on your Desktop. Then, choose :IPOD: which should be located near your C drive. Now, right click and chose :Format:. Select :FAT 32: and :Format: and then reboot your Computer. After you have erased your iPod, you will need to engage the Restore function from the iPod Updater program.


To restore your iPod, do the following: Connect your iPod to your computer using the FireWire/USB cable that came with your iPod. Now, open iTunes. In the event that your computer knows the iPod is connected, it may ask you to install the proper software. If it does not, download the newest version of the iPod Updater application. Install and open the application iPod Updater.


To continue, once you click on Restore, you may be asked to type in an Admin users name and password. When the alert box appears to confirm you want to restore iPod click :Yes:. When the factory settings have been restored, unplug the FireWire/USB cable from iPod. You will be prompted by the iPod to reconnect the FireWire/USB cable after it has turned on, and you see the message :Do not disconnect:.


If prompted, type a name for iPod in the space provided. Deselect the :Automatically update my iPod: option if you wish and click done. The iTunes main window appears, and the download status is displayed in the iTunes display. Wait until the iTunes display says the update is complete. Quit iTunes.


Next, you will need to disconnect the FireWire/USB cable from iPod. In a short time, the language display appears on the iPod screen. Pick a language. Quit the iPod Software Updater application. If the iPod does not turn on at all, disconnect it from power and let it sit unconnected for approximately 24 hours. Then do this all over again.


If your iPod is still under warranty, go to the AppleCare iPod Support Page to arrange for service. If your iPod is out of warranty, you will need to contact a repair service for further options.


No one wants to see the Sad Face iPod. Once again, you should try to erase and restore your system. If the sad face still appears on your screen, you will need to replace the hard drive.


You may see the electrical outlet icon when you are updating or restoring your iPod. First, disconnect your iPod from your PC and connect it to a power adapter for iPods. The electrical power will help finish the process of updating. If your iPod does not have a wall charger, you will need to get one.


The Do Not Disconnect Icon will be familiar if your iPod is connected to a PC.


The Magnifying Glass Icon will appear at times. This is the iPods internal checking system where it checks the hard drive for problems. If you see a disk and checkmark, this is a good thing. Your iPod passed the hardware scan. If you see a disk and arrow, this means problems were found. You should erase and restore your system as soon as possible.


A disk with an exclamation point signals caution and means the scan failed. In this case, you need to reset your iPod by holding the Menu and Play buttons down for ten seconds. The scan should automatically start again. A disk with an :X: means the scan was cancelled.

Summer has arrived, baseball is in full swing, and the kids are out of school. Thinking back, one of my least favorite aspects of summer during grade school was the assigned reading. Although I am an avid reader now, for some reason I could never get into the books that were required of me.
