Question by cahsuthenut: Would you mix white and stainless steel appliances?
I’m on a budget with my new kitchen and am getting appliances used. The kitchen is white quartz counter with dark walnut-shade cabinets. It is U-shaped. You you consider doing a stainless steel fridge and stainless steel dishwasher on one side of the U, with a white cooktop and white double wall oven on the other side of the U? I like stainless steel but at the same time, I feel like the white cooktop looks better built-in to the white counter.. if mixing won’t work- what would you go for- all SS or all white? I’m going for a mid-century modern look..

Go with what you have, for now. You can always get new appliances down the road. Live with them for awhile, and you will be able to determine which you like. When I built my house, I put together a package from the Maytag store. I went with all white, except for the dishwasher, It’s in the middle of a run of hickory cabinets, and I thought the white would look funny, so I ordered black. They called me 3 times to confirm that I wanted a black dishwasher. It looks great though. Hope this helps.

Question by railroadking06: What color appliances would look best for dark grey walls and black kitchen cabinets, floors are black marble?
I think that a black refreigerator , oven range, and dishwasher would maybe be too black since alot of black is already in my kitchen.
But then again i don’t know anything about what looks best.
But what color would be best in your opinion, black or stainless steel. thanks
This is for my kitchen only (these colors)

I think stainless would work best in that situation.

Question by Rachael: How much would you pay for this rental unit?
It’s a completely detached 1/1 guest house, about 800 sqft craftsman-style guest house with a newly resurfaced kitchen and newer appliances (including dishwasher). It’s about 100 years old, has original woodwork and hardwood floors, and original clawfoot tub in the large all-tile bathroom. Comes with basic window coverings. No central heat or air. I have a window unit that the previous tenant was using in the summer, and there is an electric wall heater. It doesn’t get really hot here in the summer, but the winters can be quite cold. The unit is on one partially-landscaped acre that it shares with the main house. It has a separate driveway and a garage shed with a pretty old (but working) washer and dryer. There’s also a large brick patio out back. The rental is in a nice older neighborhood, about 15 minutes from the center of a medium-size city. No utilities included.

I have not been able to find any comps in this area. The previous tenant was paying 0, but he had been paying the same rent for 22 years and we made a lot of improvements after he moved out. We painted everything, put in a dishwasher, tore up the carpet and refinished the floors. We also put in tile counter tops and refaced the cabinets in the kitchen (all together about a ,000 update). Brand new 1/1 apartments about the same distance from town are going for about 0, but I don’t know if my unit should be more, less or the same price. It’s completely detached with its own outdoor area, virtually no noise from neighbors or the street, it has a lot of character, and it’s in a much more desirable neighborhood than most apartment complexes. It’s also a lot bigger than the average 1/1 But the unit is very old, with detached parking and no central heat and air, and no other amenities like a pool, clubhouse, or fitness center. I’m thinking 00 but my husband says that’s way too much. What do you think? We need to list it on Monday.

Question by Elena A: Would my old WHITE kitchen appliances go with new “SPACE CREAM” kitchen cabinets?
We’re about to have our kitchen refitted with new “space cream” kitchen units from MFI. The worktop will be oak brown and the floor will be in similar oak colour tiles so the cream cabinets stand out. They look stunning but I’m worried that they won’t really go very well with my old WHITE washing machine, fridge-freezeer and dishwasher. I suggested to my husband to paint them in metalic silver colour but he doesn’t want to hear. Has anyone painted their kitchen appliances from white to metalic silver? Would they go with cream cabinets? Please put me out of my misery! Thanks a lot!

Question by melaniecampbell: Would a home equity loan work for me?
Here is my situation:

-owe 00 to citifinancial @ 28.9% interest (student loan & personal loan)— min. payment of 7/mo

–owe 900 to finance company @ 18.99% interest (car loan)– min payment of 8 bi-weekly

–owe 0 to HBC credit card @ 28.9% interest (used for wedding attire and wedding necessities)

–owe 6000 to mortgage company @ prime + 8%- originaly purchase price of house was 3,900

Citifinancial has offered us the following home equity loan terms:

–lowered interest to 18.9%
–pay off car loan & credit card debt
–pay off our existing loan with them
–lowered monthly payments to 7/month (we would pay bi-weekly and about 0 bi-weekly, so paying more then minimum payment)
–00 cash upon signing new loan (which we could REALLY use to buy new appliances for our kitchen- dishwasher is dead, and so is our dryer)

My husband doesn’t think it is a good idea to take our a home equity loan, while I think it is a good idea because of a lower interest rate, paying off other debt, and NOT financing our needed appliances (at an in-store rate of 28% interest, because we don’t have extra cash right now)… what do you think?

We have had our original citi loan for 13 months, and it was originally 500– we have it down to 00 in a year, so we are good at paying it on time, and paying more on it when we can.
I think it is a good idea to take the loan, because it seems it will help our credit, lower our monthly payment (though as I said, we would continue paying more than the minimum)– and the best thing would be that our other loans are more than 18.9% interest- so wouldn’t it make sense to pay only ONE bill (the new citi loan) than a bunch of small ones at higher interest rates??

Help me make sense of this- how can I explain this to my hubby so he sees it the same way I do? HE says he doesn’t want to do it because he wants to pay citi financial off and never deal with them again- he doesn’t see how it can really help us out right now…

ALSO it would prolong our payments to citi for 2 years beyond what we are owing them right now- this new loan would be for 160 payments- 160 months=13 years whereas we owe them for a little under 11 years right now… and our car loan is 4 years ammort.

What makes sense- taking the loan OR paying what we do now on different bills and never getting anywhere?

holy mackerel a mortgage at Prime +8% what are you thinking? you should get an FHA fixed note to 95% and pay off everything with maybe the exception of the student loan as that interest is tax preferences any way. I find it hard to believe if you have not done so but looked at getting that interest lowered as well. Never do a variable rated note while rates are so cheap right now.

Question by brookey s: Do you think it would look dumb to have black and stainless appliances in your kitchen?
I need to get a new dishwasher and fridge. I really like the look of the stainless/titanium, but I already have a black stove and microwave. My kitchen is not that big. Do you think that it would look dumb if I got the stainless or should I stick with all black?

All black will make it look smaller, I have stainless & black & I love it. Plus, if you decide to get new appliances, you’ll have more options with that color scheme.

Question by AskAnswerDiscover: Would my house heat or a space heater be more cost efficient?
I live in a one bedroom townhouse. Its fairly small. The biggest room is my bedroom at 14 x 14. Im rarely ever in the living room/kitchen and spend abot 90% of my time (when I get off of work until I go into work again) upstairs in my bedroom.

I unplug all appliances that I dont use, except the refrigerator and a nightlight in the living room. In my bedroom the computer (is mostly always on), tv and a light are always plugged in.

My gas/electric (BGE) is normally around average for the past couple of months (and these were in the summer times— the price of gas/electric is expected to rise again here in MD)

I think my heat and hot water run on gas. What is the minimum water temp. i should put my water on? My shower also pumps ALOT of water through the showerhead and it seems to get cold fast…any suggestions and why does it get cold fast?

Best answer:

Answer by fyrscan
Water temperature can be as low as is comfortable. You might consider buying a low-flow shower head. Gets cold fast probably because more water is being used than can be heated before your are finished showering. To solve this, increase the water heater temperature or take quicker showers. Regarding your house heat, you might consider closing all the heat vents & doors to the rooms you don’t use. Gas heat is typically cheaper than an electric space heater.

Question by Kristin: Which would you pick? New, expensive house or small, old house?
The new, bigger house would be 0/month. It comes with all appliances except a refrigerator. It does, however, need a septic tank and insulation blown in. It has wood floors, three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and ceramic tile in the kitchen and bathrooms. It has 1550 square feet, and is arranged very well.

The small house, built in 1964, would be 4/ month and is on 5 acres of land. It’s teeny tiny and comes with no appliances. I don’t know the last updates on the electricity, plumbing, or air conditioning. It definitely needs a new roof. It has ceramic tile in the kitchen and new carpeting. It has 800 square feet and a fireplace.
