Question by Carnof: Stainless steel upgrade?
We are buying a new townhouse and I am wondering how much people pay for an upgrade from black kitchen appliances to stainless steel appliances. This will include a fridge, stove, dishwasher and built-in microwave. As we are in Canada, I am looking for the price of upgrades in this country as I know it will be lower in the US.

Why don’t you just call the nearest friendly, smiling, appliance dealer near where you are. He can give you a better idea what you will pay than we can.

At the top of most of my client’s “wish lists” these days is a microwave drawer. The Sharp microwave drawer KB-6001NS is a tough one to beat. Considering Sharp makes the internals for virtually every other microwave drawer on the market, it’s usually only competing a another variant of itself.

The Sharp microwave drawer is one of those appliances that, at first, might seem a bit odd. Very quickly though it becomes an indispensable cooking tool, especially for those who are limited in their kitchen space. The counter space saved becomes immediately apparent, while those who might have otherwise had to build in a microwave into an oven column gain 16″ more inches of storage space. Easily enough to add another drawer or an additional shelf.

The microwave drawer itself is extremely well built, with a sleek stainless door and trim. The handle is painted a gray color that matches the stainless steel, probably to keep fingerprints away. The touch controls are well laid out, though the screen is a typical LCD panel that could have been traded for something a bit more flashy. This isn’t the 90′s.

You can get a different version of the same Sharp microwave drawer with an automatic opening and closing drawer. I prefer the manually operated one (this version) as it leaves one less thing to go wrong. The drawer action is strong, if not a bit stiff.

Sharp KB6001NS InteriorInterior space is a factor. If you’re used to over-the-range microwaves you’re going to immediately notice the height restrictions. Some items you may have been able to squeeze into the microwave before (e.g. tall baby bottles or glasses) will no longer make the cut. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it is something you should be warned about.

The 1.o cu. ft. Sharp microwave drawer interior will fit most 9″ x 13″ casserole dishes. At 1,000 watts, it comes pre-programmed with a Sensor Reheat, Defrost, and Popcorn setting. Because the front of the unit is already “framed” it doesn’t need a kit to look right and sit flush. However, it does require a bit of retrofitting to most cabinetry. The unit itself is 26 3/16″ deep and so in order to sit flush within the cabinet, the unit must be snug against the wall. This requires you to have the back part of the cabinet cut out. Otherwise you end up 3/4″ (or 1/2″) short by hitting the back of the cabinet. This is a detail virtually EVERY kitchen designer overlooks and so don’t be alarmed if you see them cutting up the cabinet on your job site – there is simply no way around it.

At under 0 dollars the Sharp Microwave Drawer is now a staple of the modern American kitchen. Its convenience and simplicity make it hard to pass up.

Pros: Beautiful look, concealment / placement, 1000 watts cooking power in a tiny drawer

Cons: Size still requires retrofitting most cabinets, interior height limited.

Appliance Buyer’s Guide

Question by Divva: Should kitchen cabinet knobs and lighting match appliances?
I am sprucing up my kitchen. The cabinets are an oak color. The walls are a khaki/tan color (Sherwin Williams Latte) http://www.myperfectcolor.com/PhotoDetai… I’m adding new ceramic floors (probably like Roman gold or American Olean Hazelnut – still debating that). My fridge is stainless steel. I’ll be adding a stainless steel stove and eventually as money permits a matching microhood and dishwasher.

I need new lighting and am going with track lighting to spread the light around. In the eat in, I’m changing the pendant to another (it’s awful gold and frosted dome now). I’m also adding knobs to the cabinets.

Question: I like the dark bronze lights. Should the lights match the appliances in a nickel or something? Should the knobs also match the appliances? I’m thinking the dark color lends to the floor, cabinet and wall color, but I’m not sure if they will have to match the appliances?

FYI: the kitchen accessories are red.

Some people do tend to stay in the same color tone. At times that can be a little over done. The stainless fixtures would break up the overdone thing and serve as great accents that would compliment each other. I’ve been dealing with these issues for a while and suggest the latter but it still boils down to your individual taste.

Question by Beth B: Kitchen Remodeling — Where to Start???
My husband and I will be remodeling a kitchen that hasn’t been touched since 1972 – the original appliances (double-oven, range top, dishwasher, sink and fridge), cabinets, flooring and lighting have not ever been updated and are still in place.

We want to remove the carpeting and replace with hardwood or laminate and continue it throughout the house. The kitchen and adjoining “den” area are all paneled and we would like to paint over the paneling as well and we need to replace cabinet doors.

So, the main things we need to do before we move in are:
1. Pull up and replace flooring
2. Remove old appliances and install new ones
3. Remove doors from cabinets and replace with new door fronts (cabinets themselves are in good shape)
4. Paint walls
5. Install “canned” lighting instead of fluorescent lights / light fixtures

What should we do first? We’ve never remodeled anything before and are at a loss as to what to do first.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Hi: Well its a very good idea you have remodelling your Kitchen. This is the place in which, can add value to your home. I would start with painting first off. As not to get any paint on your new flooring, along with moving your Kitchen cabinet doors prior to painting paint your cabinats the same time as your walls. After painting install your pot lights. The next phase would be to rip up your old flooring and repair any damage wood below it and then install new flooring. Either Tile or Laminate. If you happen to install tile. ensure you have a good base. Lay 1/2 plywood sub floor before installing your tiles. This prevents tile’s from cracking along with your grout cracking between the tiles. When installing laminate flooring. Ensure all trim is removed around door entrance and base boards. If your kitchen is downstairs. Make sure you buy vapour barrier and lay this prior to laminate floor installation. Good luck with your Reno, hope everything goes well for you. I hope I have answered your question. Cheers, Renovated many homes my self and have installed lots of laminate flooring. to many to homes to count. ops ensure you leave 1/4″ gap around the perimeter of your laminate flooring, this allows your floor to float, it will keep your laminate from buckling if your house shifts in winter

There is new best practices whitepaper concerning the Best practices in VMware View 5 environments.

In this Whitepaper you’ll be able to read and see the inconveniences and problems which are known when using traditional AV software in VDI environments. If you know how the traditional AV software behaves, you might want to avoid troubles before you start your deployment.

The traditional AV software usually generates AV storms when all AV agents installed inside of each desktop scans the desktops and users are actually logged in at same time, you can easily saturate at 100% the host’s CPU and NAS/SAN.

You might wonder what to scan? Where the data of users are located? There are several places which needs to be taken into consideration:

-  Mapped drives or shared folders
-  User data disks (UDD)
-  ThinApp-related storage
-  The Persona Repository for View Persona Management.

Also, the traditionnal AV software requires that each desktop has a unique SID, you can see that there is a workaround on how to re-mediate that in the paper.

If the antivirus software you choose for your environment is not integrated with vShield, and the software needs a local SID to generate its own GUID for each endpoint, or if for any other reason you need a unique local SID for your linked clone desktops, you can use a workaround to avoid running Sysprep

Tina de Benedictis, Technical Marketing Manager for Enterprise Desktop at VMware, revised and updated this document for View 5. Tina’s background at VMware includes writing Knowledge Base articles and developing Technical Support training on ThinApp, Fusion, and Capacity Planner.

For protection of virtual machines in a View virtual desktop environment, VMware recommends the vShield Endpoint solution offered by VMware partners. VMware partners who have integrated their antivirus solutions with vShield Endpoint are:

- Trend Micro
- Bitdefender

Antivirus practices VMware View 5

A quick quote from the Paper:

This paper focuses on the best practices for protection against viruses in the VMware View™ 5 virtual desktop environment. Antivirus software is one of the largest segments in today’s computer security market. Nearly every enterprise deploys antivirus software on every desktop. As services such as security, mobility, access control, and line-of-business applications are all rolled up into the datacenter or cloud, antivirus practices need to be rolled up as well.

For more details, read the full whitepaper here: Antivirus Practices for VMware View 5.
