At the top of most of my client’s “wish lists” these days is a microwave drawer. The Sharp microwave drawer KB-6001NS is a tough one to beat. Considering Sharp makes the internals for virtually every other microwave drawer on the market, it’s usually only competing a another variant of itself.

The Sharp microwave drawer is one of those appliances that, at first, might seem a bit odd. Very quickly though it becomes an indispensable cooking tool, especially for those who are limited in their kitchen space. The counter space saved becomes immediately apparent, while those who might have otherwise had to build in a microwave into an oven column gain 16″ more inches of storage space. Easily enough to add another drawer or an additional shelf.

The microwave drawer itself is extremely well built, with a sleek stainless door and trim. The handle is painted a gray color that matches the stainless steel, probably to keep fingerprints away. The touch controls are well laid out, though the screen is a typical LCD panel that could have been traded for something a bit more flashy. This isn’t the 90′s.

You can get a different version of the same Sharp microwave drawer with an automatic opening and closing drawer. I prefer the manually operated one (this version) as it leaves one less thing to go wrong. The drawer action is strong, if not a bit stiff.

Sharp KB6001NS InteriorInterior space is a factor. If you’re used to over-the-range microwaves you’re going to immediately notice the height restrictions. Some items you may have been able to squeeze into the microwave before (e.g. tall baby bottles or glasses) will no longer make the cut. It’s not a deal breaker by any means, but it is something you should be warned about.

The 1.o cu. ft. Sharp microwave drawer interior will fit most 9″ x 13″ casserole dishes. At 1,000 watts, it comes pre-programmed with a Sensor Reheat, Defrost, and Popcorn setting. Because the front of the unit is already “framed” it doesn’t need a kit to look right and sit flush. However, it does require a bit of retrofitting to most cabinetry. The unit itself is 26 3/16″ deep and so in order to sit flush within the cabinet, the unit must be snug against the wall. This requires you to have the back part of the cabinet cut out. Otherwise you end up 3/4″ (or 1/2″) short by hitting the back of the cabinet. This is a detail virtually EVERY kitchen designer overlooks and so don’t be alarmed if you see them cutting up the cabinet on your job site – there is simply no way around it.

At under 0 dollars the Sharp Microwave Drawer is now a staple of the modern American kitchen. Its convenience and simplicity make it hard to pass up.

Pros: Beautiful look, concealment / placement, 1000 watts cooking power in a tiny drawer

Cons: Size still requires retrofitting most cabinets, interior height limited.

Question by Carnof: Stainless steel upgrade?
We are buying a new townhouse and I am wondering how much people pay for an upgrade from black kitchen appliances to stainless steel appliances. This will include a fridge, stove, dishwasher and built-in microwave. As we are in Canada, I am looking for the price of upgrades in this country as I know it will be lower in the US.

This month, Sub-Zero / Wolf has released two new models of refrigerators. Both are just variants of existing built-in refrigerators. The internal dispenser provides ice and water on demand without sacrificing the exterior aesthetics. The interior water tank holds up to 50 oz. of chilled, purified water. An impressive system that doesn’t add any more space than on the regular door dispenser models.

To my knowledge this is an industry first, and a well executed one at that.

Available now at your nearest Sub-Zero / Wolf dealer.

My Grandparents chose to love each other when they met as teenagers, and then, they chose to love each other every part of every day, through the Great Depression, through absence during war, child rearing, work, illnesses… Life. Finding TRUE love? They met… And That was it. Again, the true love part was a daily choice whether either was as attractive or as exciting as the day they met. This Lego Mindstorms NXT Appliance Controller allows you to turn on-and-off your Household mains powered equipment such as lights, radios, heaters, etc. via your Robot. Using this Controller in conjunction with a Lego Temperature Sensor you can control your aquarium, and even as a incubator control to hatch out bird eggs. The appliance is switched on and off using an Optically Isolated TRIAC (Electronic Relay) to safe guard the NXT from damage. You treat the controller as a standard Lego Light Sensor. The controller uses the software toggling as used for a standard Lego Light Sensor LED switching from reflected to ambient light sensing. This project needs a lot of care during construction due to the Voltages involved. 120-240V AC KILLS! Only for experienced hackers. For SAFETY the NXT 240V AC Appliance Controller has to be fitted into a suitable electrically isolated case. Question by : Do you like modern technology? Are you looking forward to the future?
I was watching this video called A Day Made of Glass and it shows a future where nearly everything is a touch screen, from bathroom mirrors to refrigerators and even your kitchen counter. I think it’s really cool. I’m looking forward to the day where we have such things and also rely entirely on solar energy and other clean power sources. I love technology, I love the idea of a futuristic society but when I showed most of my family that video, they act like progress is something to be avoided. They seem to think that because we lived without those things in the past then why should we change? Mind you, these same people are dependent on electricity and certain appliances such as coffee pots and stoves and refrigerators but we survived in the past without them but my family still wouldn’t be willing to give them up. But that concept seems to fly right over their heads. They believe anything they had growing up is good and whatever they come out with later is bad. But not me, I love the idea of a modernized society.

The video, in case you are interested (it is sooooo cool!)

If you got stuck with a plugin installed in vCenter and can’t uninstall, there is a quick tutorial on how to do this. Here are the steps:

01. Start your web browser, go to http://vcenter server name or IP/mob

02. Click Content > Click ExtensionManager > Select and copy the name of the plug-in you want to remove from the list of values under Properties.

03. Click UnregisterExtension. (Will appear in new window – in pop-up).

04. Go and paste the name of the plug-in and click Invoke Method to remove the plugin. Close the window. Then, refresh the Managed Object Type:ManagedObjectReference:ExtensionManager window to verify if the plug-in was removed .

Question by Divva: Should kitchen cabinet knobs and lighting match appliances?
I am sprucing up my kitchen. The cabinets are an oak color. The walls are a khaki/tan color (Sherwin Williams Latte) http://www.myperfectcolor.com/PhotoDetai… I’m adding new ceramic floors (probably like Roman gold or American Olean Hazelnut – still debating that). My fridge is stainless steel. I’ll be adding a stainless steel stove and eventually as money permits a matching microhood and dishwasher.

I need new lighting and am going with track lighting to spread the light around. In the eat in, I’m changing the pendant to another (it’s awful gold and frosted dome now). I’m also adding knobs to the cabinets.

Question: I like the dark bronze lights. Should the lights match the appliances in a nickel or something? Should the knobs also match the appliances? I’m thinking the dark color lends to the floor, cabinet and wall color, but I’m not sure if they will have to match the appliances?

FYI: the kitchen accessories are red.

Some people do tend to stay in the same color tone. At times that can be a little over done. The stainless fixtures would break up the overdone thing and serve as great accents that would compliment each other. I’ve been dealing with these issues for a while and suggest the latter but it still boils down to your individual taste.
